How to Get to Paxos and Get Around: Ferries, Buses, Boats and the Harbour Beaches

Paxos has no airport, so everyone arrives by sea. The island is small, about 10 km from Gaios in the south to Lakka in the north, and its three harbour villages, Gaios, Loggos and Lakka, each have a beach a few minutes' walk away.

Here's how to get there, how to get around once you've landed, and where to swim in each village.

1. Gianna

Gaios and Mongonisi

From Corfu Town, hydrofoils and passenger boats reach Gaios in roughly an hour; slower sailings take much longer. If you're bringing a car, the car ferries run from Igoumenitsa on the mainland and take about an hour and a half to two hours. Boats land at Gaios' new port, about a 15-minute walk from the centre, and there are only a handful of taxis on the island.

Gianna, the closest beach to central Gaios, is a short walk from the harbour: pebbles and a few steps into the water, popular with locals.

Good to know: Don't swim out too far from Gianna: boats come and go through the channel all day.

2. Levrechio

East coast (Loggos)

Loggos, about a 15-minute drive north of Gaios, is the smallest of the three harbour villages. A public bus runs between Gaios and Loggos, but many visitors rent a small car, scooter or boat for a few days.

Levrechio, five minutes' walk south of the harbour, is a small white-pebble beach with a taverna and clear, deep water.

Good to know: Boat-hire desks in Loggos and Gaios rent out small boats: the easiest way to reach the west-coast coves.

3. Harami

Lakka and the north

Lakka sits around a sheltered horseshoe bay at the island's northern tip, popular with yachts. Harami, on the western shore of the bay, is a few minutes' walk from the village on a tree-shaded path.

Its sand and shallow water make it the favourite beach for families with young children, with a taverna, sunbeds and watersports in summer.

Good to know: Lakka is a yacht anchorage, so the water by the village is busier than at Harami.

At the southern tip, about 3 km from Gaios, a short bridge crosses the Bay of Ozias to the islet of Mongonisi and its sandy, organised beach. It's the one beach on Paxos most people drive to.

From Gaios, water taxis and excursion boats also cross to Antipaxos in about 15 minutes in summer.

Good to know: There's no car ferry to Antipaxos: leave the car in Gaios.
