Kalami beach guide
Kalami is a small bay on the northeast coast, between Nissaki and Kassiopi, with a beach of large white pebbles. The pebbles keep the water very clear and the snorkelling along the rocks is good, but the seabed is stony, so water shoes help.
The bay is best known for the White House, where Lawrence Durrell lived with his wife Nancy and wrote much of Prospero's Cell. It still stands at the water's edge: the ground floor is a taverna and the upper floors are let as a villa.
Most of the beach is lined with sunbeds, beach bars and tavernas, and small motorboats can be hired from the jetties to explore the coast. The southern end is usually less crowded, and for a quieter swim, Kouloura is a short walk north.

About Kalami
- Is Kalami a sandy beach?
- No, Kalami is a pebble beach, so water shoes are handy. Facilities: sunbeds, taverna, and family friendly.
- Is it easy to park at Kalami?
- Paid parking. Spaces are limited and fill up early in summer, so arrive before 10:00 or come by scooter or bus. You can drive right up to the beach.
- When is Kalami least crowded?
- It gets busy around midday in July and August; mornings and late afternoons are calmer. Outside June–September it's quiet all day.
- Which wind is best for swimming at Kalami?
- The beach faces east, so it's calmest when the wind blows from the west and gets waves when it blows from the east. It stays sheltered when the summer maistros (northwesterly) blows, which makes it a good choice on windy afternoons.
